:: A Great Day Was Enjoyed Creating Illustrations With Clay! ::

I have always been fascinated by textures. Being a kinaesthetic learner, I feel a strong connection with materials when I hold them in my hands. Recently I discovered the incredible illustrations of Barbara Reid. She has mastered the art of sculpting illustrations with clay in a way that I found to be very inspiring. I thought it would make an excellent activity for one of our gatherings to have the children learn the process of creating their very own clay illustrations!

This was truly an activity that engaged the group across all age levels. While the example illustration appeared simple enough to create, the children soon learned that it was composed of many separate layers of color that had to be applied and smoothed onto the canvas by hand. Using a template, they then cut into the clay the form of a Polar Bear as the main subject of the illustration. Finally the finer details and textures could be added to complete the image.

At the end of our time together we had a lovely gallery of adorable Polar Bears perched atop floating glaciers to display in the hall.

This group was very industrious and all worked very diligently to do their very best work. The results were very impressive!

Much preparation and intention goes into planning each one of our Garden Of Friend's group activities. Every aspect and detail of the experience--from the way the space is thematically decorated to the selection of the story, the selection and arrangement of materials, the developmentally apropriate project-based outcomes, the refreshments, alignment with the seasons, and even the color scheme is carefully thought out to ensure that the children get the most out of their time during each gathering. If you have not yet had the opportunity to join us, we invite you to be a part of the experience and join us!

:: A Great Day Was Enjoyed Creating Geodesic Dome Forts! ::

Last Thursday we were excited to welcome back fellow Garden Of Friends member and dynamic instructor Sunny to the studio to lead the children in Geodesic Dome and creative fort building!

Sunny brings a wonderful energy and charisma that is inspiring and uplifting to the children that she teaches! At this gathering she brought along a diverse palette of colorful building materials as well as a new architectural design twist--the Geodesic Dome!

To begin our time together, Sunny led the large group of children in ice-breaker games to build upon the communication that would be needed later when the children where building together.

Once the materials were taken out, each group was able to select materials to suit their own visions for their completed fort.

Sunny has a well-developed program that she has honed over her many years of experience working with children. It was enjoyable to watch as the children took joy in navigating the challenges of communication, teamwork, and resourcefulness as their unique creations took shape!

At the end of the gathering each group had the opportunity to talk about their fort and highlight the special features they had incorporated into their structure. Parents also had a chance to visit each fort and appreciate the many creative elements of the children's handiwork!

There is always so much to be gained from this kind of hands-on building and play!

The opportunity to construct and understand the geometric and spatial relationships of these structures first-hand was a memorable and valuable educational experience for the children and one that we look forward to revisiting again!

:: A Great Day Was Enjoyed At The Valentine Card Swap! ::

Many of us have fond memories of receiving Valentine's Day Cards from our fellow classmates in elementary school.

Last Thursday gave a whole new homeschool generation the opportunity to experience the warmth of sharing Valentine's Day sentiments in the form of exchanging colorful handmade and handwritten correspondences with one another.

It was so special to watch our children taking part in such a a wonderful tradition. By the end of our time together, each child's decorated Valentine's Day Treat Bags were brimming to capacity with fanciful holiday favors and cheerful expressions of friendship and love!

When it came time to begin our craft, we opened by reading aloud from a Valentine's Day storybook that taught about the inumerable ways we can all appreciate others in our lives.

The studio was beautifully transformed with hanging paper lanterns, festive banners, branches adorned with felted hearts, and coordinated table finery!

Posey bouquets of Pink Tulips adorned the tables, along with centerpieces displaying the finished craft (as well as its edible inspiration) that was the focus of the class!

The children were provided with felt to cut and fashion into adorable colorful Fortune Cookies! When the cookies were finished being sculpted, each child was given slips of paper to inscribe with their own unique messages to place inside!

Despite the inclement weather we had a very successful turnout with many new guests and familiar friends alike! This is one holliday tradition we intend to continue for many years to come!

::A Great Day Was Enjoyed Creating Walnut Families!::

:: Whole Shell Walnuts, Colorful Ribbons, Patterned Fabrics and glue were used to create sweet Walnut Families! ::

As the snow lightly fell outdoors, A Garden of Friends gathered indoors in the warmth of the studio space to create with whole shell Walnuts, colorfully patterned fabrics, wooden beads, and different hues of ribbons and glue!

Mothers and children enjoyed cutting fabrics, wrapping ribbons, and fashioning clothing to create their very own personalized walnut families!

The process was enjoyable and the end results were sweet, everyone seemed to be very proud of their handwork!

As the classical music played indoors and the snow fell outdoors, someone noted that the snow seemed to be falling in rhythm with the music! This along with a lovely flowering tea that steeped until it's petals slowly opened in a glass teapot added to the coziness of our time creating together!

The walnut families will now be a part of the imaginative play of their young creators and will serve as a lovely keepsake of the special time shared together with a wonderful gathering of friends!

:: Join us on Thursday January 22th from 10:00am - 1:00pm in Bristol County, MA for A Waldorf Winter Wonderland! ::

The children arrived last Thursday to a bright and sunny winter wonderland! The tables were cheerfuly set with handmade Waldorf dolls and handmade Polar bears!

Snowy branch centerpieces sparkled with icicles and dancing snow children!

This week A Garden Of Friends was proud to once again welcome Master dollmaker and artisan Mary!

Our time together began with the reading of the classic Waldorf tale of "The Story Of The Snow Children" by Sibylle Von Olfers. As they listened intently to the story, the children were surrounded by every character in the story that Mary Kay had handmade using Wool from her own flock of sheep!

In the story, a girl named Poppy is gazing out of the window at the snow when suddenly she sees that the snowflakes are really Snow Children, dancing and whirling in the garden. Soon, she finds herself transported into the Snow Queen's wintry kingdom!

When the story was finished, Mary Kay showed all of the children how to create their very own Snow Children using white Wool tufts of yarn, wooden beads, and Wool roving.

What made this event special was the thought and intention that was put into every gathering. The story and the decorations set the tone for the handwork that the children created together. The story was a tale set in the winter season. The materials for the handwork activity were sourced directly from the farm of the artist who guided the children in their project.

One of the many wonderful aspects of the Waldorf philosophy is that it incorporates awareness of the rhythyms of the seasons with naturally selected materials. The educational focus on head, heart, and hands is both enriching and honors the imagination of childhood while orienting children into their place in the world in a peaceful and nurturing environment.

We have an amazing group of families participating every week at A Garden Of Friends. What is happening here is truly special and unique. It is wonderful that our children have the opportunity to be with each other and develop their creative talents together under the tutelage of so many talented artists while receiving the love and support of their parents every step of the way. It is a privelege to be a part of something so enriching and beautiful!

We would like to thank Mary for another unforgettable experience!

:: A Great Day Building Forts! ::

Making forts was a fond childhood memory for many of us! Many a rainy day could be spent taking every blanket in the house and draping it over a foundation of kitchen chairs, couch arms, and cardboard boxes!

Last week A Garden Of Friends passed that nostalgic pastime onto a new generation of architects and dreamers!

Sunny, our special guest instructor led the group in transforming the studio into a fort building mecca! She brought with her a truckload of refrigerator boxes, ribbons, clips, scissors, and other fun construction materials and inspired the children to create their own spaces using the resources they were offered. You could see the children's eye's light up with excitement when Sunny brought out all of the materials!

Another enriching aspect of the experience was that the children had the opportunity to create their unique expressions collaboratively in a cooperative community atmosphere!

It wasn't long before a whole village of colorful cardboard dwellings began to pop up from every corner of the studio! When the children were finished with their forts Sunny paid a visit to each small group to talk about the special features that the children had incorporated into their designs.

Some of the forts had multiple rooms. Others had functional windows and doors. One even featured a duck pond on the roof! It was impressive to see how each child had used the same materials in their own unique ways!

Each fort had a personality to match their owner, and the children had a blast visiting and navigating through the forts that they had so proudly built!

We are all eagerly looking forward to the next creative adventure that Sunny has in store for us!

:: A Great Day Creating Story Stones! ::

One of Aesop's fables became the centerpiece for this week's theme during our gathering of A Garden Of Friends. "The Crow and The Pitcher" was read aloud for the children. It illustrated the ingenuity of the Crow in surmounting an obstacle with resourcefulness and creativity. Some of the children also had the opportunity to interact with the Crow exhibit and each added small stones to raise the water level in a jar in the same way the Crow did in the fable!

They then went to task hand-painting their own Story Stones together. Each smooth stone was adorned with either a scenic or character driven element of a story. The children could later bring them home and use the Story Stones to retell their own stories in imaginative play!

We hosted another large group of 30+ children this week!

We also were excited to debut our New Year's Resolution Conservation initiative by incorporating the use of glass Mason Jars and Cloth Napkins into our snack time.

Following the craft the children enjoyed free play with board games as we waited for our painted stones to dry!

We are looking forward to next week's special guest Sunny  and her fun Fort Building program. We will see you next week!

:: Join us on Thursday January 8th from 10:00am - 1:00pm in Bristol County, MA to create Story Stones! ::

Your child will paint a single image on each stone. When placed out on a table they can be used for story starters and inspired storytelling.  These stones can also be painted to match the characters of your child's favorite book!

On Thursday we will listen to a beautiful interactive fable. There will be also be a collection of artful stones from around the world on display which have been hand- painted.  After the story your child will then begin outlining and painting their own Story Stones!

We will also have a chance when our time of creating is through to try out the stones interactively with the group!

:: A Great Day Creating Gingerbread Ornaments! ::

:: It was heart-warming to see the children have the opportunity to partake in such a homespun tradition as making their own Christmas ornaments! ::

At our most recent Garden Of Friends gathering we got into the Christmas spirit by decorating Cinnamon Applesauce Christmas Ornaments!

The children listened to the story of the Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett read aloud and were treated to live Violin music by two of the young musicians in the group!

The delicious scent of Cinnamon filled the air and the joyful melodies of the Christmas season filled our ears as we sat down together to artfully embellish each 'Gingerbread' ornament with bright white painted icing!

When the children put the finishing touches on their ornaments we laid dozens of fancifully decorated ornaments out to dry and enjoyed sipping on hot chocolate with old-fashioned peppermint stick stirrers!

It was heart-warming to see the children have the opportunity to partake in such a homespun tradition as making their own Christmas ornaments.

There is something so magical about unwrapping handmade ornaments from years past and dressing the Christmas tree with these priceless reminders of years gone by!

Next year another handmade ornament will be added to the the finery of the tree, sweetly scenting the air with its fragrance and bringing a smile to our hearts as we remember this day spent with special friends!

:: A Great Day Making Impressions In Clay! ::

:: As the story was being read a light squall of snow began to fall outside the studio windows, adding a special surprise to our cozy wintertime morning together! ::

This past week A Garden Of Friends met to create some lovely holiday ornaments for the Christmas Tree!

Each child rollled out white clay and selected some decorative greenery to make impressions in the clay!

The ornaments were then tinted with a watercolor wash to finish the piece and tied with a piece of Jute Cord!

During our refreshment time, one of the fathers from the group read aloud "The Mitten" by children's book author Jan Brett!

While he read the story, some of the children were called up to help dramatically re-enact the story with small hand-carved wooden animal figures and a pair of woolen mittens!

As the story was being read a light squall of snow began to fall outside the studio windows, adding a special surprise to our cozy wintertime morning together!

It is always exciting to meet and talk with all of the new guests who join us every week! The children were all very focused and intent on their crafting, and we enjoyed a relaxing and creative time together!

:: An incredible day at the hands-on fiber gathering! ::

:: This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the children gathered that day to see the end-to-end processes of an artisan and to be inspired to be more deeply aware of the processes of their own lives whenever they find themselves engaged in their own creative and artistic endeavors! ::

We are all aware of the role that process plays in our everyday lives. When we bake a loaf of bread we must first proof the yeast, mix the ingredients, knead the dough, wait for it to rise several times, bake it, and serve it. Prior to that was another series of processes for the farmer who raised the grain and threshed it, and the mill that ground it into flour. Every step of the process is vital and necessary to yield the finished product that eventually manifests in even something as simple as our daily bread.

Mary is a fiber artist who understands and appreciates process at such a personal level that she wants to be meaningfully involved in every step of the process and see it through from start to finish.

Last Thursday she visited A Garden Of Friend's and told the story of "Pelle's New Suit" to the children. Mary Kay is a dollmaker who creates Waldorf dolls from Wool harvested from sheep that she raises on her own farm.

She surprised us all when she brought a handmade Pelle Doll and a stuffed sheep she made to dramatically re-enact the story as she read it aloud! The children were able to watch the Wool from the sheep magically transform into a new suit of clothes for Pelle. She described to us how her sheep are sheared. She passed around Wool Roving for the children to hold. She then showed us how the Roving is carded, which many of the children were able to experience for themselves.

She then brought out her Spinning Wheel and showed the children how the Roving is spun into yarn. (The yarn she spun for us that day had been dyed four times to recreate the exact color blue as the yarn used to make Pelle's suit!)

After the Spinning Wheel demonstration she showed us how the yarn is woven into fabric using her portable loom. Many of the children were able to move the shuttle on the loom and notice how the yarn wove together to create the unique texture and color patterns in the fabric.

Finally, she brought out three different colors of dye she had mixed. Every child was able to pick one of the colors and dye a piece of Wool to bring home with them!

This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the children gathered that day to see the end-to-end processes of an artisan and to be inspired to be more deeply aware of the processes of their own lives whenever they find themselves engaged in their own creative and artistic endeavors!

At the end of our time with Mary Kay the children took out games for free play and ate a healthy lunch together. It was exciting to have such a large group gathered together for such an amazing and inspiring event!

:: We enjoyed time with both new and known friends creating Leaf Mobiles! ::

We had a fantastic time last Thursday creating Autumn leaf mobiles!

One of the mamas read aloud the story of "The Apple Cake", a serendipitous and heartwarming tale that shows the value of giving up what you have to help others, and the rewards that can come along when you least expect it.

The culmination of the story came when the protagonist was able to exchange her acts of humanity and generosity for the ingredients to bake an Apple Cake.

After the tale was finished, the children then were able to sample a delicious homemade German Apple Cake that was baked using the recipe from the story.

We welcomed many new faces to the group this week and enjoyed meeting new friends and sharing an enjoyable time together of meaningful conversations and creativity!

It was also wonderful to see parents crafting together with their children, making special memories, and having a beautiful handmade craft to bring home with them!

We are already looking forward to making Pomanders next week and hope you will join us in the holiday fun!

:: A Relaxing Time Was Enjoyed at the Taking Care of Mama Soiree! ::

:: A full and relaxing evening was enjoyed! ::

We communed with our senses and enjoyed having the opportunity and space to get to know each other in a different context than our usual Garden Of Friend's gatherings.

One of the moms led some of us in a centering session of Yoga, while other moms shared their knowledge of crafting during breakout workshops.

In one well-received workshop we were enlightened about all of the different uses for Essential Oils.

We were even able to mix our own version of the legendary Thieves Oil recipe, in addition to many other variations and applications of these amazing therapeutic and sense-awakening oils.

Between the tasteful aesthetics, textures, sights, and scents, there was a richly-layered environment that complemented the depth and creativity of the kindred spirits who gathered together that evening!

One of the goals of the Mama's Soiree was to celebrate and recognize the common ground that we stand upon as mothers and friends!

It was satisfying on many levels to see this happen, and we are all looking forward to planning another Soiree next year!

:: A Great Day Creating Lanterns! ::

:: Each lantern was enveloped in unique kaleidoscopic patterns of cheerful color! ::

Last Thursday, A Garden Of Friends gathered to craft colorful and brilliant paper and glass lanterns!

Many new friends joined us for this uplifting activity. We learned about and were inspired by a re-telling of the story of Martinmas by one of the mamas. The children learned that the light in the lantern symbolizes the light inside of all of us, which we carry through the dark winter months as we bid goodbye to autumn and welcome winter.

It is always so exciting to see how each child expresses their own personality through their artwork.

Each lantern was enveloped in unique kaleidoscopic patterns of cheerful color!

Tea lights were placed into some of the dried lanterns to demonstrate the warm glowing illumination of the light as it passed through the colored glass.

For the past several Thursdays the weather outside has been raining. This Thursday was no different, but we were happy to enjoy a time of creativity and storytelling, to meet some new friends, and bring forth some special light of our own to brighten the day!

The space was warm and dry and the children were excited to paint their still-life paintings!

From the demonstration we learned how to initiate the process with a proper pencil study and learned a bit of art history as well.

Once the palettes were selected the children went right to work brushing colorful swirls of paint upon their canvasses. As they diligently rendered their impressions, some ate Sunflower seeds that had been provided as a snack for the occasion. While the children painted a mama read aloud an inspirational tale about painting by author Peter Spier.

We were pleased to welcome many new families this week! Some came from many miles away to participate in this creative and idyllic activity.

When all of the canvasses were finally laid out to dry it was amazing to see all of the many different artistic interpretations and beaming faces of the children as they showcased their work!

Tucked away in a quiet corner of a lovely herb farm A Garden of Friends Homeschool Group hosted a wonderful day of yoga!

A majestic stand of Bamboo provided a natural meditative backdrop for our Yoga practice. Through the poses we were able to open our hearts and minds--and practice our balance!

Mamas and children partnered together for Yoga and special games creating a lovely time of family togetherness.

At the end of session we had a chance to lay on our mats in the soft green grass with eyes closed or looking upwards to the sky. It was wonderful to take that breath and to have that time to be mindful of the moment.

Each family then selected a polished stone treasure to bring home with them.  The stones had a positive word inscribed upon them to bring a bit of our Yoga practice into the rest of our week at home.

Moms can relax while the children learn how to make a calming aromatic Lavender Essential Oil Spritzer.  (Younger siblings are also welcome to sit, color and play during the demonstration)

After our time of creating together we will break for delicious herbal tea and homemade baked goods!

We will stroll the gardens, visit with the goats and chickens, and tour the greenhouses.

An Herbalist at the farm will then lead us on a very special edible plant walk!  During the walk we will discover how to properly identify native weeds and herbs growing on the farm and gain insight into their beneficial culinary and medicinal uses.

Join us for this amazing, multi-sensory, interactive, and fun experience!

:: A Great Day At The Carousel! ::

:: It was a great experience to ride such a gorgeous historic carousel so well preserved and artfully rendered.  It instantly transported our minds to another place in time! ::

A Garden of Friends gathered together on picnic blankets in the park to enjoy lunch together with friends both new and old alike!

The children enjoyed several games of tag as the happy melodies of the carousel scored our day.

More friends continued to join in throughout the day as the children ran about.

After the picnic we all ventured over for many carousel rides, with the children excitedly darting off to pick their horses of choice!

The horses appeared to be racing one another with our smiling and waving children upon their decorative backs!

When the last bell on the carousel finally rang out, families walked back together to sit again on our blankets in the grass taking in views of the pond along the way.

:: A Great Day Creating Sun Tea! ::

:: As the sun warmed the tea the colors swirled together creating a lovely visual drawing the children back from their play to sip their delicious creations! ::

As we gathered together under the shade of the trees to prepare our time of mixing sun tea the children enjoyed some time running along with geese in the field.

Fresh mint from the garden, bright yellow lemons, cheerful straws, lemon tea and spring water was set out for the children to return to.

Each child was able to create their very own individual cup of tea by placing each of the ingredients into their cups and finishing it off with a name tag to mark their tea that they then sat out in the sun to brew!

As the sun warmed the tea the colors swirled together creating a lovely visual drawing the children back from their play to sip their delicious creations!

Handfuls of ice chilled each cup of sun tea while a platter of cake and jam was enjoyed over laughter and conversation!

This past Thursday A Garden of Friends Homeschool Group celebrated the 4th of July with bike decorating followed by a bike parade and a good old-fashioned picnic!

As families began to arrive everyone gathered together in the shade at picnic tables adorned in red, white and blue in celebration of the holiday and to make some sweet summertime memories together!

Conversation and laughter was shared over refreshing watermelon and ice cold lemonade!

The children cheerfully adorned their bikes with festive colors and made many triumphant laps around the park as they experienced their first bike parade! Parents stood by waving, clapping and cheering them, grateful to bear witness to the special memories and friendships that had been created on this day!

We are pleased to share some of these photos and give you a glimpse into our latest group activity and a window into what A Garden of Friends  is all about.

We cordially invite you to join us at our next park day gathering!
